==== Solders ==== Bismuth is utilised in silver-free electronic solders to provide solid solution strengthening. Because bismuth atoms are larger than tin atoms, their insertion into the tin crystal lattice distorts the structure and restricts the movement of crystal defects (dislocations). This atomic lattice distortion provides resistance to mechanical deformation during thermal cycling. Keeping the bismuth content below the solid solubility limit prevents microstructural instability and electromigration across the typical operating temperature range of electronic circuitry. Unlike particle-strengthened alloys (such as SAC305), this solid solution mechanism resists deformation without generating the dislocation pile-ups that drive microstructural recrystallisation, reducing a primary cause of joint failure and loss of electrical continuity.

In chemistry, racemization is a conversion, by heat or by chemical reaction, of an optically active compound into a racemic (optically inactive) form. This creates a 1:1 molar ratio of enantiomers and is referred to as a racemic mixture (i.e. contain equal amount of (+) and (−) forms). Plus and minus forms are called dextrorotation and levorotation. The D and L enantiomers are present in equal quantities, the resulting sample is described as a racemic mixture or a racemate. Racemization can proceed through a number of different mechanisms, and it has particular significance in pharmacology in as much as different enantiomers may have different pharmaceutical effects.
==== Renal filtration, reabsorption, and excretion ==== Potassium ions are reabsorbed from blood plasma entering the glomeruli into the renal tubule of the kidneys. Only a small amount of potassium reaches the distal nephron. Renal handling of potassium is closely connected to sodium handling. Potassium is the major cation (positive ion) inside animal cells (150 mmol/L, 4.8 g/L), while sodium is the major cation of extracellular fluid (150 mmol/L, 3.345 g/L). In the kidneys, about 180 liters of plasma is filtered through the glomeruli and into the renal tubules per day. Sodium is reabsorbed to maintain extracellular volume, osmotic pressure, and serum sodium concentration within narrow limits. Potassium is reabsorbed to maintain serum potassium concentration within narrow limits. Sodium pumps in the renal tubules operate to reabsorb sodium. Potassium must be conserved, but because the amount of potassium in the blood plasma is very small and the pool of potassium in the cells is about 30 times as large, the situation is not so critical for potassium. Since potassium is moved passively in counter flow to sodium in response to an apparent (but not actual) Donnan equilibrium, the urine can never sink below the concentration of potassium in serum except sometimes by actively excreting water at the end of the processing. Potassium is excreted twice and reabsorbed three times before the urine reaches the collecting tubules.

==== Cells ==== Sponges have around 6 different types of cells that can perform different functions. Sponges are a good model for studying the origin of multicellularity because the cells are capable of communicating with one another and re-aggregating. In an experiment conducted by Henry Van Peters Wilson in 1910, it was found that cells from dissociated sponges could send out signals and recognize each other to form a new individual. This suggests that the cells that compose sponges are capable of independent living, however once multicellularity was possible then aggregating together to form one organism was a more efficient way of living.
== Causes == A spontaneous spinal CSF leak refers to any CSF leak that has not been preceded by a surgical or other medical procedure. Later evidence suggests that these leaks result from either a discogenic pathology, such as microspur, osteophyte or spinal disc herniation that pierces the dura like a knife, connective tissue disorder (which can often lead to discogenic pathology), or spinal drainage problems. A cerebrospinal fluid leak can be a rare complication of an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. One study suggested a CSF leak to follow from 0.5% of operations. Another study suggests a CSF leak to follow from 1% of operations. In most of these cases repair is successful.

==== Compatibility and feature support ==== All DisplayPort cables are compatible with all DisplayPort devices, regardless of the version of each device or the cable certification level. All features of DisplayPort will function across any DisplayPort cable. DisplayPort does not have multiple cable designs; all DP cables have the same basic layout and wiring, and will support any feature including audio, daisy-chaining, G-Sync/FreeSync, HDR, and DSC. DisplayPort cables differ in their transmission speed support. DisplayPort specifies seven different transmission modes (RBR, HBR, HBR2, HBR3, UHBR 10, UHBR 13.5, and UHBR 20) which support progressively higher bandwidths. Not all DisplayPort cables are capable of all seven transmission modes. VESA offers certifications for various levels of bandwidth. These certifications are optional, and not all DisplayPort cables are certified by VESA. Cables with limited transmission speed are still compatible with all DisplayPort devices, but may place limits on the maximum resolution or refresh rate available. DisplayPort cables are not classified by "version". Although cables are commonly labeled with version numbers, with HBR2 cables advertised as "DisplayPort 1.2 cables" for example, this notation is not permitted by VESA.
